What I want out of the iPhone 5

Yep, only a couple months after the iPhone 4S release debacle, the iPhone 5 rumors are surfacing everywhere throughout the techno world. It never fails. There’s plenty of rumors concerning the iPhone 5′s specifications, but frankly, I hope they’re wrong on some things.

International Business Time reports that Steve Jobs was very involved in the iPhone 5 development before his death, after all, enhancing speculation that Apple had the iPhone 5 all but ready. The problems comes in terms of the network, not the product.

it’s reasonable to think that Apple is sitting on the iPhone 5 (as many have suspected) yet the company will determine when to release the product in 2012 or beyond according to when LTE 4G networks like Verizon’s are running more smoothly.

So what would I like to see with the iPhone 5?

Keep the screen size please.

First, there’s all this hype that the screen will be wider on the iPhone 5. Back in October, before the iPhone 4S’s release, Mashable.com was positive that the next generation phone would host a wider display. Sure, they had no idea that the iPhone 5 would fail to make its debut, but once again, all indications point to a 4″ or 5″ screen.

To me this is ridiculous. I would rather see the same screen size but with a smaller, thinner shell. Some serious space could be saved by removing the famous home button. Although many consumers may be engrossed by the many super-sized Android-powered phones, I find them less attractive and less mobile.

Another advantage to maintaining the same screen size is keeping peace and harmony among apps made for iOS. If the screen-size does change, many apps will likely run into resolution problems. I’m betting the screen size is increasing since a variety of case manufacturers already had cases ready for a larger, thinner phone before the iPhone 4S was even released.

Easy and Free Ringtones

Listen, I don’t literally expect or desire that artists provide free music for my ringtones. But, I should be able to easily select a song I’ve already purchased. I shouldn’t be expected to synch my iPhone with files I’ve had to create using a 3rd party app or by mangling with filenames.

Basically, if you do this the easy way, you have to buy the same song twice. That’s bullshit. I know Apple and the music industry want their money, but this seems just wrong. If I already own the song, I just should not have to buy a separate ringtone.

Sweetened-up Siri

The biggest disappointment on the iPhone 4S is it’s biggest attraction. Siri is cool for about one minute until you realize Siri is severely limited. There’s no way Steve Jobs condoned, or had any say, in releasing the software to the public. It just isn’t ready. Apple needs to improve the technology greatly. Maybe they can buy Quora and other FAQ sources to help the poor girl out.

Let Me Move Newsstand

How annoying is this? I don’t mind Apple pushing Newsstand and helping publishers (which seems to be working for them), but DAMMIT, I can’t put it in a folder? Hell, I can put iTunes in a folder but not Newsstand. Very lame.

Yes, there’s a hack due to an iOS bug.

GPS

Yes, I’m sure there are apps to add GPS to your iPhone, but the phone should come with one preinstalled like many Android phones do. I think this is a major weakness with the iPhone right now and it should be addressed.

Anything else?

Sure, the standard stuff like speedier processor, better resolution, NFC technology and an HD video camera would all be nice.
