Yep. That’s right. A hero in the Marvel Universe called Ant-Man is slated to get his very own movie in 2014.
Ant-Man sounds lame you say? If a story revolving around an original and FOUNDING member of the Avengers who can drastically alter his size and also communicate and control insects sounds lame, then maybe you think super strong green guys, ultra patriotic super soldiers or dudes in a wicked robotic suit is corny too.
Okay, maybe “Ant-Man” does sound ridiculous, but this guy is an AVENGER for crying out loud! I have a feeling that the big-screen version of Ant-Man will be totally cool. I feel it in my bones. Besides, his girlfriend goes by the name of Wasp and that’s just kinky.
First, there’s three guys in Marvel world that have gone by the name as Ant-Man, but there’s two you should know about.
Henry Pym – Biophysicist and Security Operations Center expert Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ Pym decided to become a superhero after discovering a chemical substance that would allow the user to alter his size. Armed with a helmet that could control ants, Pym would shrink down to the size of an insect to become the mystery-solving Ant-Man. He soon shared his discovery with his girlfriend, Janet Van Dyne, who became his crime-fighting partner as the Wasp. While Pym is the original Ant-Man, he has adopted other aliases over the years including Giant-Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, and the Wasp after Janet’s death in Secret Invasion.
Scott Lang – A thief who first became Ant-Man after stealing Henry Pym’s Ant-Man suit to save his daughter Cassie from a heart condition. Reforming from his life of crime, he soon took on a full-time career as Ant-Man with the encouragement of Hank Pym. He became an affiliate of the Fantastic Four, and most recently became a full-time member of the Avengers.
According to Wikipedia, Edgar Wright plans to direct Ant-Man as an action film for Marvel Studios which will include some humorous elements, insisting that Ant-Man will not be a comedy like the cheesy Fantastic Four.
In May, 2012, a “teaser” image of the movie was presented via Twitter. On June 28, 2012, Wright directed a test reel for the upcoming film for Ant-Man. Rumors also surfaced that Wright will be directing a post-credits scene for Iron Man 3 in which Ant-Man confronts Chen Lu.
Wright appeared at San Diego Comic-Con on July 14, 2012 to confirm Ant-Man as his next project and to show his test footage.
